Our Bond Theme - Live at the O2 Arena London

One of the really wonderful early projects I got into as a composer was scoring Film Trailers for MGM/UA with Jeff (we scored almost all their trailers as well as logos for 9 years!). One of the pinch me moments was when they asked us to re-imagine the BOND theme for the release of Goldeneye. It ended up being one of their most popular versions of the theme and was used in several of their Bond campaigns (DAD & TWINE) going forward as well as receiving a Gold Record.

Sharing our arrangement/version of the BOND theme that was recently performed live at the The O2 Arena in London, to open the show. Many thanks to Really, 007 and Tom Pickup for letting us know about the concert. Love that this version of the theme continues to live on & feel very honored to be a part of it's history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5xqDeHBAFQ

Headliner

Headliner catches up with multi-award-winning, musician, arranger and former president of the Alliance for Women Film Composers, Starr Parodi, as she discusses her path into music and the Steinberg gear she cannot do without…

From composing music for some of the biggest titles in film and TV over the past 30 years, to playing in the Arsenio Hall house band, Starr Parodi has notched up a sparkling array of credits.

From James Bond and Harry Potter, to Transformers and a wide range of network TV hits, her work can be heard in some of Hollywood’s biggest productions.

She is also an active campaigner for gender diversity across the industry, currently sitting on the board of the Alliance for Women Film Composers, where she also served as president for two years.

Here, she sits down for a Zoom call with Headliner to discuss her incredible career to date..

Did you always know that you wanted to get involved in film scores? How did you make your start in the composing world?

I started playing piano when I was really young, and when I was about 14 I got hooked on music and I just knew that that was going to be my path.

What was your big break?

I was working as a pianist and synth player and was writing some demos for scoring. I sent a cassette to one of the busiest TV writers at the time and he hired me at a really young age. He had an orchestra and he hired me to write for him and do some orchestration. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the …

Oct. 29, 2020 - What Do You Think Of That? This song was originally started several years ago, not very long after the Sandy Hook incident. We had been playing a concert at an elementary school in celebration of Black History month.

Afterwards, we were talking at breakfast when the topic of gun violence and schools came up, and through our conversation we decided to come back to my studio and start writing this song. We were inspired by the great social messaging and protest work of so many great soul artists of the 70s and how so many of their songs were still so relevant.

Working with Louis is always a window into the sincerity of the artistry of that era, where he was front and center as the young lead singer of R&B supergroup, the Temptations. More importantly, Louis himself is survivor of gun violence, and still has a bullet lodged in his body. Louis is amazing and inspiring as you can tell by listening to his one person a cappella bridge that we recorded at 1 in the morning, where he breaks into an incredible harmony with himself.

WDYTOT, being firmly retro-soul, also inspired me to play my vintage snakeskin (not real snakeskin!) covered Fender Rhodes and make it the central keyboard voice for the song. As happens with life and so many ideas, stuff happens and deadlines and projects get prioritized. Earlier this year, as 2020 got more and more crazy, Louis & I rediscovered What Do You Think Of That, and its recording and the lyrics & pertinence to today’s social/political environment were more connected than ever. It’s a message of making injustice something that is called out by both our voices and actions. People must come together and support each other to make our society more just, and reverse the course that we have been on. We must celebrate each other rather follow a path of division and hate. So as the craziness of 2020 has unfolded, we realized we had to finish WDYTOT and get it out to the world.

“it’s as if the duo is holding up a mirror and asking us not only what we think, but what we’re going to do personally and collectively to make enduring, meaningful changes that make a difference.” - J.W. Vibe

Lucciola translates to Firefly in Italian, They are beautiful and bring such a brilliant colourful energy to our world. I hope this piece I wrote and recorded on my Steinway prepared with fabric and felt brings you a sense of light, energy and gentleness. Sheet music available here.

Sept. 18, 2020

When I score films I will often treat or prepare my Steinway with different types of fabric, felt or other items to give the piano a darker, more harmonically complex and intimate sound. It also exposes the sound of the inner workings of the instrument and illuminates the sound of the moving wood, felt and metal. I have decided to release some pieces that I have written using these techniques, which take the listener on a warm and intimate journey. The first of these pieces is called "I Sama Bili" which translated from Icelandic literally means "in this very moment". When you listen I hope it helps suspend time for you as it it does for me.

Sheet music is available here.
